Hi All,

Question: What do you do if you have to kill 20 minutes before a training session?

Now usually the answer is something like get a latte, watch the players hitting or go over the programme for that day….but it doesn’t normally include driving around Florida in a brand new black Ferrari but that’s what happened today. My thanks go out to Sebastian Grosjean for taking me out in his awesome car and for actually laughing when I made the comment that at least we know there’s something out there that changes direction faster than he does!

Anyway, back to tennis…..I’ve decided that this blog is going to have the slightly unusual theme of “tennis players surprising me”. I will explain but I think Dave and Hampo will agree that it’s a pretty special moment when a player does something really good that you are not necessarily expecting. In this last 2 months it has happened a lot.

Firstly, when a top player loses in a grand slam they are usually on a plane out before the clapping has even stopped and it’s very unusual for them to stay around but this is exactly what Andy Murray decided to do in Australia. The result against Tsonga was a tough one but his progress all the way to the final showed his form but for Andy to not go home after that loss and stay in Melbourne for another week to train hard in the heat for me shows his commitment to getting better.

His phone call yesterday morning to say he had lifted more weight than ever before was also a surprise both for the actual call itself and for the amount lifted!

In conjunction with John Mark at Chris Everts academy I sometimes train a 17 year old Russian girl called Anastasia Pivovarova. As coaches we regularly talk about where players can get in the rankings and how fast they can get there and I’m happy to admit that her current position of 180 on the WTA tour after basically one year playing senior tournaments has surprised me in a really good way. It just shows what a tough attitude with some decent information can do. I have actually had a bet with Anna, Ana and Stefi where she can get to this year so we’ll see who’s right!

Talking of our girls, they have been producing a few surprises of their own. Firstly they managed to expertly plan and execute their whole weeks training last week without any help at all. They decided who they would practice with, what drills they would do, where they would do it, when they would do their fitness, what they would do in their fitness…basically everything down to recovery and eating schedule. Now this could easily sound like a coach being lazy or as I obviously prefer to see it players taking total responsibility for their tennis life.

The net result of this week’s “self” training was a doubles title at Clearwater challenger won in a very aggressive final set champions tie break. After 3 losses in finals this was a nice result for the work they put in.

Thanks also to William “barnone” Floyd, superbowl winning running back with the San Francicso 49ers who predicted that our girls would win the tournament and he would present the cheque to them. (See photo of the two Annas with this phenomenal athlete………and of course William!)

All I need now is for Stefi to actually understand my humour, for Anna and Ana to win back to back titles and for Sebastian to kindly give me his car for the weekend and I’ll be all out of surprises…..for now!

Until the next blog. Happy hill sprints.
